Windows 7 mail

If you are running Windows 7 and want to choose a mail client but don’t know which one, this article will help you decide.

Windows XP and previous OS’es had Outlook Express included. It provided simple mail functionality so it was not suitable for advanced mail users. This is how Outlook Express looked like in Windows XP.

Windows Vista also had a built-in mail client named Windows Mail which had a few more features than Outlook Express like Instant search, Junk mail filter and Phishing filter.

Windows 7 does not include a mail client so here are a few of your options:

Microsoft Outlook 2007

The picture shows Microsoft Outlook 2007 running in Windows 7.

Microsoft Outlook 2007 is a part of Office 2007 but can also be bought separately. It is a powerful mail application that can connect to Internet mail accounts (POP3, IMAP and HTTP) and Microsoft Exchange. It also has Calendar, Tasks, Journal and Contact Manager.

Outlook’s functionality can be extended with the use of add-ins. It can import mail and addresses from other programs so if you want to switch to Outlook from your current application you can do it without breaking a sweat. The only disadvantage it has is that it is not a free application. You can download a free trial of Outlook as part of Office 2007 professional from here.

Mozilla Thunderbird

Here is Mozilla Thunderbird running in Windows 7.

Mozilla Thunderbird is an open-source mail application developed by the Mozilla Foundation. It is free so you don’t have to pay anything for it. Although it does not have as many features as Microsoft Outlook its ease of use and simplicity make Thunderbird a good choice. It has support for add-ons and there are a lot to choose from. It also supports themes so you can personalize it exactly the way you want to. The included junk mail tools and phishing filter are there to ensure that you stay ahead of spam and email scams. Mozilla Thunderbird does not have any problems running in Windows 7 so if you are looking for something free, lightweight but reliable mail application Thunderbird will not fail you.
