This article will explain how to export Microsoft Outlook 2007 e-mail messages and addresses. Outlook uses .pst files to store mail messages, contacts, tasks and calendars. If you want to export any of these in order to move them to another computer or just for backup you can use one of these methods:
Method #1 Import and export wizard
- Open Outlook 2007.
- Go to the File menu and click on the Import and export wizard.

- Select Export to a file and click on Next.

- Click on Personal Folder File (.pst) and then on Next.

- In the next screen click on Personal Folders (or on its current name if you renamed it), check Include subfolders and hit Next.

- Click on Browse and select where you want to save your .pst file and type a name if backup.pst isn’t suitable for you.

- You can also select one of the 3 duplicate items settings before clicking Finish.
- Type a password if you don’t want someone snooping around in your messages and click OK.

- Repeat steps 2 trough 8 if you also have an Archive Folders besides Personal Folders.
Method #2 Copying the .pst file
- There is also the possibility of copying the .pst files from their location. Make sure that Outlook 2007 is closed and that you can view hidden files. If you don’t know how to do this in Windows 7, click here. The Windows XP and Vista procedure is similar.
- Default location for .pst files varies according to the operating system used. In Windows XP the .pst files are located in C:\Documents and Settings\user_name\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook. In Vista and Windows 7 it is located in c:\users\user_name\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook. In both cases you have to replace user_name with your current user name.
- Once you get to the specific folder for your operating system you have to copy Outlook.pst (if you didn’t rename it) and the archive.pst (if you have one) to the backup location.

You now have a backup of your e-mails, contacts, appointments and tasks which you import to another computer or on the same one if you perform a reinstall.

Hello Tim!
You are right when you are saying that it’s time for the move to Windows 7. More people should think like you. There is no need for worries. I have been using Windows 7 for a year now and i am very pleased by it.
